Contestants on Love Island USA face accusations of anti-Semitic behavior, causing concern about potential prejudice within Gen Z demographic.

Love Island USA, the second-most watched streaming show this summer with 1.2 billion minutes viewed across the first nine episodes, has found itself at the centre of a storm of controversy. The show, which airs six nights a week during the US summer break, features attractive singles being sent to an island, where they must remain 'coupled' or face expulsion, with the winning couple receiving a cash prize of $100,000.

The latest controversy revolves around Jewish Canadian contestant Elan Bibas and Palestinian American contestant Huda Mustafa. Their kiss on the show was met with a wave of backlash, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok. Some users responded with vitriol, describing Bibas as a “threat,” using hateful language including the term “Zio,” which is known as an anti-Semitic slur popularized by figures like David Duke.

The backlash escalated further when social media users discovered a photo of Bibas posing with an Israeli soldier during a Birthright trip, as well as his shared surname with members of a family tragically affected by violence, which some commentators exploited to intensify their attacks.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned the labeling of Bibas as “dangerous” simply for his Jewish identity and background, highlighting the blatant anti-Semitism involved in the comments directed at him. Love Island USA publicly urged viewers to “be kind and spread the love,” responding to the hateful social media comments and emphasizing the need to combat online hate.

This incident has sparked broader discussions about anti-Semitism among younger generations. Commentators have noted that the presence of a Jewish contestant on the show led to an outpouring of Israelophobic and anti-Semitic bile on social media platforms. The controversy has revealed underlying issues of prejudice within the Gen Z demographic, as the normally lighthearted dating show took a surprisingly “sinister turn” when hate speech erupted against Bibas.

Hannah Kotkin, a collegiate associate at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and a rising senior at Sarah Lawrence College, has commented on the demonization of Bibas. However, Kotkin's article is not one of the most popular articles on the website.

Elan Bibas, despite the controversy, follows StandWithUs, a non-partisan American charity aimed at combating anti-Semitism. Donations to the website's fund allow for ad-free reading, exclusive events, and access to the comments section.

It is worth noting that some individuals sifted through years of Elan Bibas's content to find a supposedly incriminating Instagram post from 2022, showing him on a 'Birthright' trip to Israel.

The connection between Israelophobia and anti-Semitism is becoming increasingly apparent, as some individuals have sought to target Bibas due to his supposed connection to Israel. Kotkin states that an entire generation now associates Israel with genocide, and that there is no escape from this pernicious falsehood for Jews.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for increased awareness and education about the dangers of anti-Semitism and Israelophobia, particularly in the digital age where hate speech can spread rapidly and anonymously. It is crucial that platforms like Love Island USA, and society at large, take a stand against hate speech and work towards promoting understanding, respect, and inclusion.
