In the upcoming Euro Championship, the German basketball team faces a challenging season with key players missing due to injuries and opt-outs. Among those missing are high-class professionals Moritz Wagner and NBA champion Isaiah Hartenstein. However, the team can count on the experience and defensive prowess of Daniel Theis, who is expected to play a crucial role.

Theis, a 33-year-old centre, has had a storied career in the NBA, playing for teams such as the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, and New Orleans Pelicans. This summer, he returned to Europe, joining AS Monaco in the EuroLeague after a brief stint with the New Orleans Pelicans earlier in the 2024-2025 season. Unfortunately, he has been dealing with knee problems, which forced him to miss two games and one practice session for the German national team.

Despite these challenges, Theis remains a key figure for the German team. Former national player Per Günther, now a TV expert for MagentaSport, believes Theis is more important than ever due to the many question marks surrounding the team. Günther, who once played with Theis in Ulm, praises Theis' defensive abilities, calling him "indispensable" for the German team.

Coach Alex Mumbru is managing a squad that has been dealing with injuries, ailments, and illnesses for weeks. Theis' upcoming games against Spain will serve as both a sporting yardstick and a stress test for his physical condition. If Theis is fit, the German team's medal chances in the Euro Championship significantly improve.

Meanwhile, Orlando pro Tristan da Silva is expected to play a bigger role this summer. Together with Theis, they form one of the best duos in Germany over the past ten years, not just domestically. The next generation of German basketball players, led by NBA youngsters Ariel Hukporti and Tristan da Silva, is ready to step up and support Theis and the team.

Dennis Schröder, Theis' long-time teammate, expresses a desire for Theis and him to play together in an NBA team. Schröder refers to Theis as "my warrior." However, it's unlikely that Theis will return to the NBA. This summer could be Theis' last major tournament with the German national team, making it all the more crucial for him to perform at his best.

As the Euro Championship approaches, the German team will look to overcome their injuries and focus on their strengths. With Daniel Theis leading the way, they aim to make a strong showing in the tournament.
