Contest for Local Positions 2025 - Supplementary Election

In the upcoming mayoral election, two prominent candidates are vying for the position: Thorsten Berg (SPD) and Daniel Schranz (CDU).

Thorsten Berg, born in 1970, started his career as a bank clerk. His urban development and housing priorities focus on creating affordable housing, improving public spaces, and promoting sustainable architecture. He plans to develop the city with a focus on socially mixed neighborhoods, ensuring 50% of new housing is socially oriented to create affordable living space for all. To combat long-term vacancy, he proposes compulsory auctioning of unused properties, treating housing as a common good rather than a commodity, and strengthening citizen participation in city planning.

Innovative greening measures for climate adaptation and improving urban life quality are also part of his approach. He aims to make the city more climate-friendly by promoting renewable energy, improving public transportation, and encouraging cycling. To promote social cohesion, he encourages cultural events, supports education, and encourages citizen participation. He believes that culture, education, and citizen participation play a crucial role in promoting social cohesion, integration, and equal opportunities.

Daniel Schranz, born in 1974, serves as the current Mayor of the city of Oberhausen since 2015. Prior to this, he was a representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung NRW and head of the Municipal Academy. As a historian and political scientist (M.A.), he brings a unique perspective to urban development. His professional background also includes being the Mayor of the city of Oberhausen.

Schranz plans to shape the traffic of the future by prioritizing public transportation, promoting cycling, and making streets pedestrian-friendly. He is married and has three children.

Both candidates bring unique perspectives and ideas to the table, and the election promises to be an interesting one. It is essential for voters to stay informed and make an informed decision based on the candidates' policies and visions for the city's future.
