Beefing Over Nature Conservation Funding: No Cop on the Case Yet
Ongoing Controversy Surrounding State Nature Conservation Agency: No Probe Initiated as of Now - Contentious Matter Regarding the Nature Preservation Land Authority: No Inquiry Conducted as of Now
Here's the lowdown on the heated Landtag dispute over funding the State Office of Nature Conservation in Lower Saxony.
CDU MP Marco Mohrmann isn't mincing his words, declaring, "This is about two million euros on the line!" The AFd echoes his concern, with both parties accusing the state government of possible funding violations. But the question remains, where's our cop on the case?
The State Audit Office is the one raising eyebrows. They've taken issue with the lack of evidence proving state interest in the funding of the conservation office. Half the funds, they say, have been improperly dispersed to the eight conservation associations involved. Plus, some employees have been overpaid, making the total suspect sum around that hefty two million euros.
But hang on, coppers haven't been called yet. Justice Minister Kathrin Wahlmann (SPD) made it clear, "Nope, no investigation's underway by Hannover's public prosecutor's office."
Environment Minister Christian Meyer (Greens) assures us that they're not ignoring the audit office's hints. They're giving it the once-over, promise. Should any solid evidence pointing to a criminal offense surface, they'll be knocking on the public prosecutor's door.
The State Office of Nature Conservation (LabüN), around since 2015, is funded by the Environment Ministry. Besides bigwigs like BUND and NABU, it also lends a hand to the State Hunting Association, Anglers' Association, and other organizations. The office serves to help these groups out with bureaucratic know-how, with the Environment Ministry forking over 600k euros per year.
LabüN insists all's well with their funding, according to their annual reports. They trust the Environment Ministry, their funding authority and supervisory body, to be squeaky clean. They also dismiss allegations of embezzlement as bunk.
If you're looking for more than just the dish, checking directly with the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection or the Landtag of Lower Saxony would be a sound move. As it stands, the investigation's still on ice.
