Contenders for Virginia's attorney general position debate crucial matters while early voting commences
Virginia is gearing up for its upcoming elections, with the governor's race and the attorney general's race taking centre stage. Here's a rundown of what to expect.
On Monday, Sept. 29, 7News will kick off its coverage of the contrasting views of the candidates vying for the positions of Governor and Attorney General. The coverage will feature Jay Jones and Jason Miyares, the frontrunners in their respective races. Gary Nordlinger and Carah Ong Whaley will provide analysis on the high-interest issues facing Virginia voters.
In the governor's race, Democratic frontrunner Abigail Spanberger is leading in several polls against Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Spanberger is also outspending Earle-Sears 7-to-1. Regardless of the outcome, Virginia will elect its first woman governor.
The attorney general's race is equally exciting. If re-elected, Miyares would remain the first Hispanic American and the first child of an immigrant to hold the office of attorney general in Virginia. If Jones wins, he would be the first Black person to hold the office.
The Attorney General of Virginia will have a wide range of responsibilities. They will enforce antitrust laws to protect businesses and consumers, conduct or assist in criminal investigations and prosecutions, and enforce state consumer protection laws. They will also collect debts owed to state agencies, hospitals, and universities.
One of the key roles of the Attorney General is to ensure justice. This includes defending criminal convictions on appeal, defending the state in prisoner lawsuits concerning their incarceration, and assisting victims of crime in appellate cases. They will also enforce laws related to child exploitation, computer crimes, gang activities, identity theft, environmental law violations, theft of state property, and fraud against taxpayers.
Early voting in the governor's race is currently underway and ends on Nov. 1. The election for Attorney General will take place on November 4, 2023. The top of the ticket is expected to influence down-ballot races, and the attorney general's race could potentially split the ticket.
It's an exciting time for politics in Virginia, and the upcoming elections promise to shape the state's future in significant ways. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis on 7News and WSET in Lynchburg.
