Contenders for KMT leadership submit their registration applications
The Kuomintang (KMT) is gearing up for its chairperson election, scheduled to take place on October 18. Three candidates have registered for the position, aiming to lead the party and steer its course in the upcoming political landscape.
Cho Po-yuan, former Changhua County commissioner, has pledged to promote the direct election of members of the Control Yuan to safeguard people's rights. He also vowed to "rescue" KMT workers who are persecuted by an "unfair judiciary." One of his key messages is that "one China" is the basis for peace in cross-strait relations.
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lo Chih-chiang has emphasized the importance of unity within the party as the only way to defeat President William Lai. Lo, 55, believes he is the most appropriate candidate to unite the party, facilitate cooperation with the Taiwan People's Party, and gather grassroots political support.
Cheng Li-wun, a former KMT legislator, described today as a day of national disgrace. She accused the DPP of "echoing the US' theory of the undetermined status of Taiwan" on the 80th anniversary of "Retrocession Day." Cheng, who emphasized her "humble" beginnings in Yunlin County, highlighted her determination and strength of character.
In addition to the candidates' political agendas, registration for the KMT's chairperson election is open until today. Former Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin collected his registration forms, and Hau has pledged that he will not run for the presidency but will act as a "kingmaker or queenmaker" to help the KMT win elections in the next two cycles (2020 and 2028).
Former Broadcasting Corp of China chairman Jaw Shaw-kong, who had considered a run for chairman, has thrown his weight behind Hau Lung-bin. Lo and Cheng each paid an administration fee of NT$3 million and a deposit of NT$10 million during their registration.
As the election draws near, the candidates are expected to lay out their plans for the KMT's future, addressing issues such as the party's relationship with the Taiwan People's Party, the DPP's policies, and the direct election of members of the Control Yuan. The election is set to be a significant event in Taiwan's political landscape, with the winner poised to play a key role in shaping the country's political direction.
