Contemporary Director Hansal Mehta's much-anticipated series, titled Gandhi, is set to premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.
In the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025, a groundbreaking Indian web series titled "Gandhi" will have its world premiere. This biographical drama, directed by Hansal Mehta, is based on historian Ramachandra Guha's books "Gandhi Before India" and "Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World".
The series, produced by Applause Entertainment, stars Pratik Gandhi in the titular role, with Bhamini Oza portraying Kasturba Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's wife. The ensemble cast also includes international actors like Tom Felton, known for his role in Harry Potter, who plays Josiah Oldfield, a character involved in the story.
"Gandhi" is planned as a trilogy, aiming to present a more expansive narrative than previous portrayals. It delves into not only Gandhi’s life but also the broader scope of the Indian independence movement, including various supporting characters, adversaries, the British colonial context, and others involved during that era.
The series was shot across various Indian and foreign locations. Notably, it features music composed by A.R. Rahman, further underscoring its epic scale and ambition.
This series marks a significant milestone for Indian streaming content internationally, as it is the first Indian series selected to premiere at TIFF's prestigious PrimeTime slate. Its international cast and extensive scope aim to present a global, multifaceted perspective on Gandhi and the colonial era, potentially reaching diverse audiences worldwide.
Hansal Mehta, in a statement, called the selection a "milestone" and an "audacious dream". He had previously collaborated with Pratik Gandhi for the 2020 show Scam 1992. Tom Felton praised Pratik Gandhi's performance in "Gandhi", adding to the anticipation surrounding the series.
The Toronto International Film Festival 2025 is scheduled to take place from September 4 to 14. "Gandhi" is set to be a production that is both deeply personal and profoundly universal.
