Contemporary Dance Festival in Chania: 3 Days of Dance, Blending Mediterranean Traditions and Culture
The 15th annual Dance Days Chania festival, held from July 21 to August 2, 2025, was a vibrant celebration of contemporary dance that resonated with the heart of the city and its inhabitants. This renowned event in Chania, Greece, showcased a comprehensive programme of 21 contemporary dance performances, alongside 12 seminars and workshops, attracting around 120 contemporary dance artists.

One of the highlights of the festival was the Swiss group Pit Co.'s presentation of "Trilogy: For Old Times' Sake", a show that delved into the complex relationship between time, aging, and memory loss. Another noteworthy performance was "Escape" by Helene Weinzierl's dance company Cie Laroque, which depicted a journey of exaggeration and collapse, focusing on a world of suffocation and the search for freedom, peace, and inner calm.
The festival also featured "Making of a Man", a performance by Quindell Orton that aimed to challenge the power dynamic and hierarchy of gender performance and biological claims about gender. Orton's work, which premiered in Munich last May, combined video projections, personal interviews, and references from politics, pop culture, and gender issues, humorously and poignantly exploring different aspects of masculinity, archetypes, and patriarchal attitudes.
The festival's social dimension was reflected in its investment in creating safe meeting places for dialogue between the city’s people and artists, strengthening ties beyond just performances. The event also heavily relied on the dedication of volunteers, an essential factor in its success.
Phoebe Jewitt's show, premiered in Rome in 2022, was another poignant highlight. Inspired by her personal experience with her grandfather's dementia, the performance underscored the importance of talking about dementia, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and has no cure.
