Brewing Tension: Thailand's Cabinet Shakeup

Thailand's political landscape is on the edge with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra seriously considering a Cabinet reshuffle, but stressing that timing is crucial. She warned that rushing the process could lead to undesirable outcomes.

Following the weekly Cabinet meeting on the 4th of June, Prime Minister Paetongtarn addressed the speculation surrounding a potential reshuffle. Reports suggested that the Bhumjaithai Party had proposed a complete reallocation of ministerial posts, but the Prime Minister clarified that no such discussions had taken place yet.

With concerns brewing, the PM emphasized that it is not yet time for detailed discussions on the issue. While ideas are being evaluated, including potential changes that could lead to improvements, nothing is finalized. Paetongtarn acknowledged the possibility of a reshuffle, but stated that it's not yet a 100% certainty.

When probed about the extent of the reshuffle, the PM remained tight-lipped, stating that it's too early to speculate. Reports suggesting certain ministries have been designated for specific individuals did not come from her, she added, acknowledging that the individuals mentioned in such speculation might feel unsettled.

Prior to any reshuffle, the PM confirmed that consultations with coalition party leaders would be essential, both to provide advice and gather their input. When asked whether a reshuffle is required at this point, her response was careful: "It's something I'm considering internally."

Regarding coalition parties' positions on a reshuffle, the PM stated that they haven't expressed their views yet. However, if a reshuffle is necessary, she would call them in to discuss. The PM emphasized the importance of not making decisions without discussions.

Given the fact that only two years remain in the government's term, and the need to achieve results, the PM commented: "It's better to proceed at the right time rather than rush. If we move too quickly, the outcome might not be as effective."

Behind the Scenes: The Pheu Thai Party's Game Plan

According to sources, the ruling Pheu Thai Party, as the leading coalition partner, is taking the lead in shaping the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle. The key objective is the reclamation of the Interior Ministry—a powerful agency central to national administration. This move is seen as part of broader preparations for a potential future general election.

Potential Losers and Gainers

  • Pichai Naripthaphan: As Minister of Commerce, Pichai is expected to be removed from the Cabinet with near certainty.
  • Prasert Chantararuangthong: Prasert is a strong contender for the role of Minister of the Interior.
  • Phumtham Wechayachai: Phumtham is expected to retain his position as Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister due to ongoing national security concerns.
  • Manaporn Charoensri: Manaporn is no longer expected to be shifted to the Interior Ministry. She is also tasked with overseeing the strategic Entertainment Complex project.
  • Sorawong Tiengthong and Jiraporn Sinthuprai: Both Sorawong (Minister of Tourism and Sports) and Jiraporn (Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office) are expected to retain their positions.
  • Klatham Party: The Klatham Party is expected to continue overseeing the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and is unlikely to be transferred to the Ministry of Finance.
  • Bhumjaithai Party: Bhumjaithai has reportedly expressed a desire for a comprehensive overhaul of the Cabinet, eyeing control of the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Justice. However, it remains unclear whether their requests will be accommodated. Tensions between Bhumjaithai and the current Justice Minister, Tawee Sodsong, have also been cited as a point of contention.

United Thai Nation Party: Internal Restructuring

Within the United Thai Nation Party, changes are anticipated as well. The exact extent of the reshuffle remains unclear, but the party recently amended its internal regulations to centralize the authority to decide on government participation and ministerial appointments in the hands of the party's executive committee.
