In a surprising turn of events, the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPM) finds itself embroiled in a controversy involving gold medallist Cheah Liek Hou. The athlete, who won gold in both the Tokyo 2020 and 2024 Paris Games, has expressed frustration over not receiving his promised reward, sparking a series of events that have raised questions and concerns.

Liek Hou's gold medals brought pride to Malaysia, but his recent social media post has caused a stir. The President of MPM, Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin, stated that the post has damaged the council's image. The post in question was about Liek Hou's dismay at not receiving the RM60,000 reward promised to gold medal winners, more than a year after the Games.

The commitment for the reward was made by the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kementerian Belia dan Sukan Malaysia) to MPM. However, Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin questioned the origin of the RM60,000 figure, and MPM has yet to distribute the promised rewards.

In response to this situation, DAP's Kampar MP Chong Zhemin has demanded that Megat take responsibility and resign over the matter raised by Liek Hou. Chong Zhemin expressed his support for the athletes, stating that Malaysians will always stand behind their champions, and urged the youth and sports ministry to intervene to ensure the country's athletes are protected from unfair treatment.

Meanwhile, MPM has received RM88,000 from one sponsor for distribution to athletes. The payments to the athletes will be made today, with gold medallists receiving RM25,000 each, silver medallists RM15,000, and bronze medallists RM8,000.

However, the future of Liek Hou in major events remains uncertain. MPM has the authority to suspend him from future events, and a show cause letter will be issued to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) regarding Liek Hou's actions. MPM is also discussing legal action against Liek Hou.

In an effort to clarify the situation, MPM will send a letter to the National Sports Council to determine if there is a code of ethics regarding athletes' behaviour. This move is aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in the handling of such matters.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the athletes and their well-deserved rewards. The gold medals won by Liek Hou and other Malaysian athletes at the Paralympic Games are a testament to their hard work and dedication. It is hoped that this controversy will be resolved swiftly, allowing the athletes to continue their journey with the support they deserve.
