The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned of an immediate threat to health and safety at Iran's Natanz nuclear facility. Although radiation levels outside the complex remain unchanged, IAEA head Rafael Grossi told the UN Security Council that "radiological and chemical contamination is rampant within the Natanz facility."

Uranium isotopes may have seeped throughout the site, Grossi disclosed. "The radiation primarily comprises alpha particles and poses a severe threat if inhaled or ingested," he cautioned, but he emphasized that the most significant danger stemmed from the chemical contamination. Following an attack by Israel a few days back, the facility is brimming with hazardous substances.

Grossi further alerted the Security Council about possible attacks on other facilities, such as the Bushehr nuclear power plant on the Persian Gulf. Over 2,000 kg of nuclear material is stored there. A direct hit would result in a massive release of radioactive substances into the environment, Grossi stated. Additionally, a strike that knocks out the two power lines of the power plant could trigger a meltdown of the reactor core.

Should a nuclear research reactor in Tehran face an attack, drastic protective measures would be necessary for parts of the city.

Enrichment Data (Selectively Integrated):

The mounting tension surrounding Iran's nuclear program has brought the risks lurking at the Natanz facility to the forefront. Here's what we know about the current dangers, causes, and potential outcomes relating to the radiation and chemical contamination at the site:

  • Current Perils: The IAEA has stated that radiation levels outside the targeted sites, including Natanz, have remained consistent, posing no immediate risk to people or the environment[1]. Nevertheless, prior to the attacks, nuclear material, such as enriched uranium, was present within the facilities, increasing the risk of internal contamination[1][2]. Moreover, the ongoing conflict makes it difficult for the IAEA to monitor the situation, leading to the possibility of unnoticed hazards[1].
  • Etiology: Besides the recent attacks, the presence of nuclear materials and poor security measures contribute to the risks posed by the facilities[1].
  • Possible Consequences: Apart from elevated risks to workers and personnel within the facilities, potential outcomes include adverse effects on the environment (if containment measures fail)[1] and diplomatic complications as tensions escalate and hinder peace negotiations[1]. Nonetheless, for now, the IAEA maintains that the immediate risk to the general public and the environment beyond the facilities remains contained[1]. It stressed the urgency of halting hostilities to facilitate inspections and risk assessments[1].
