Ceasefire in place between Thailand and Cambodia - Consultation by the Commission on the draft resolution concerning the state of affairs in the Middle East.

A ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, brokered by Malaysia and involving representatives from the US and China, was breached on Tuesday, July 29-30, 2025. The breach occurred just a day after the agreement was put into effect at midnight on July 28, 2025.

The Thai army spokesman, Winthai Suwaree, stated that Cambodian forces launched armed attacks on several areas within Thai territory, constituting a deliberate breach of the agreement. The attacks resulted in heavy fighting and at least 38 fatalities, with 11 soldiers and 14 civilians killed on the Thai side, and eight civilians and five soldiers on the Cambodian side.

Thailand strongly condemned the Cambodian actions, calling them a "flagrant violation" and "act of aggression" with an apparent "lack of good faith." The Thai Army stated it adhered strictly to the ceasefire initially but was compelled to exercise self-defensive retaliation during continuous Cambodian attacks overnight and into July 30.

Cambodia, however, denied any firing took place. The Cambodian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the border remained calm, contrary to the Thai army's claims.

In response, diplomatic efforts led by China sought to reaffirm the ceasefire. By the afternoon of July 30, both sides publicly recommitted to the ceasefire during a meeting involving China's Vice Minister Sun Weidong in Shanghai, appreciating China's role in easing tensions.

The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on an unspecified date at a meeting in Malaysia. The details of the meeting are yet to be disclosed.

| Side | Response | |------------|----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Thailand | Condemned Cambodian attacks as ceasefire violations; conducted self-defense retaliation; called for Cambodia to comply fully; lodged complaints to Malaysia, US, and China. | | Cambodia | Denied any firing took place; later participated in diplomatic talks to reaffirm ceasefire commitment. | | China | Brokered meetings and affirmed its constructive role in de-escalating the situation. |

As a result of the conflict, more than 200,000 people have been displaced from their homes. The situation at the front has reportedly eased since the ceasefire at midnight, as reported on Tuesday morning on Facebook by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Following his intervention in the conflict, Trump announced a ceasefire and peace, and directed his team to resume trade talks after the ceasefire was achieved. Trump referred to himself as the "President of Peace" following the intervention.

The clashes are the latest escalation in a long-standing dispute over border demarcation in the so-called Emerald Triangle. This dispute has been ongoing for decades, causing tension between the two countries.

Malaysia holds the chairmanship of the Southeast Asian regional grouping ASEAN this year, and has been actively involved in brokering peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia.
