Construction work on the electronic platform should be delayed, suggests OB Ansbacher, and relief should be provided for ongoing projects in the event of the central station's shutdown.
Ulm's Mayor, Martin Ansbacher, has once again voiced his concerns about the planned shutdown of Ulm's main train station in 2026. In a letter to Deutsche Bahn (DB) in May, Ansbacher urged the railway company to reconsider the timing of the Electronic Interlocking System (ESTW) installation, stating that it is inappropriate for Ulm's institution.
The shutdown, scheduled to begin at the start of 2026, is part of DB's plans to modernise Ulm's main station. However, Ansbacher is demanding effective relief measures for the city if the construction work proceeds as planned.
Close, early, and continuous coordination is of central importance for the replacement traffic, as it could potentially push the urban infrastructure to its limits. Ansbacher reiterates the intention to continue the dialogue with DB to keep the burden on citizens, commuters, and businesses as low as possible.
Ansbacher has previously expressed these concerns in a letter to DB in January, and he has renewed them in his May letter. He is calling for DB to examine how the city can be relieved if the installation must still proceed as planned. Relief measures could involve using existing train stations (Neu-Ulm) or stops within the Ulm/Neu-Ulm city area, as far as safety permits.
In addition, Ansbacher has emphasised the importance of early, clear, and understandable communication with the population for the acceptance of the measure. He has also applied for measures to ease the impact on Ulm from the planned closure, but the exact details of his requests and the date they were submitted are not specified in the available sources.
Ansbacher's efforts aim to ensure that the modernisation of Ulm's main station is carried out in a way that minimises disruption to the city and its residents.
