Union Berlin, the popular Berlin-based Bundesliga football club, has announced plans to move to the Olympiastadion for one season as their home ground, Stadion An der Alten Försterei, undergoes renovation.

The renovation, which was originally planned in 2017, has been delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis and issues with the traffic concept. When completed, the stadium is expected to have a capacity of around 37,700 seats, an increase from its current 22,012.

The club president, Dirk Zingler, has also expressed his ambition for Union Berlin to play at the Olympiastadion in the 2025/2026 season, but during the upcoming season, the club will be using the stadium as a temporary venue.

Construction work around the Olympiastadion is set to begin as early as late June, with the temporary venue to be ready for Union Berlin's matches. The project includes the construction of a new professional training centre, a parking garage, and a clubhouse.

It's worth noting that the Olympiastadion is currently shared with Union Berlin's city rivals, Hertha BSC. The completion of all construction work at the Olympic Stadium is scheduled for June 2026.

The expansion of the Alten Försterei is expected to begin at the earliest in 2024, with the aim of minimizing the period Union Berlin won't be playing at their home ground. The renovation is designed to modernize the stadium and improve the fan experience, making it a more fitting venue for the growing club.

Union Berlin's move to the Olympiastadion is a testament to their success and growing popularity, and fans can look forward to an exciting season at this iconic venue.
