The construction of Gia Binh International Airport, a new-generation smart airport model, is progressing in Vietnam. Located approximately 40km from central Hanoi, the airport is set to become a significant gateway for Bac Ninh, linking the region with major economic centres at home and abroad.

On August 19, the ground-breaking ceremony marked the official start of the project. The airport, covering nearly 1,960 hectares across the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao, is being developed to 4E international standards.

Recent developments have seen key milestones achieved. The central steel roof structure for Long Thanh International Airport, a sister project, has been successfully lifted by ATAD Steel Structure Corporation and Swiss subcontractor VSL, as part of the Vietur joint venture. Masterise Group, a key player in the development of Gia Binh International Airport, also contributed to the removal of the central steel roof for Long Thanh International Airport.

Vietnam Airlines has also shown its commitment to the project, launching two key Long Thanh Airport projects on June 15 - an in-flight catering facility and an aircraft maintenance centre - with a combined investment of VND1.8 trillion ($72 million).

The airport is being designed to meet green building standards, incorporating solar power, emission reductions, and efficient use of clean energy. It will also adhere to international environmental, social, and governance standards, including carbon management under Airport Carbon Accreditation, with a target of Net Zero by 2050.

By 2030, Gia Binh International Airport will have two runways, a passenger terminal, a VIP terminal, and supporting technical and logistics facilities. The airport is expected to initially serve about 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually. Beyond 2030, the airport's expansion will continue with four runways, increasing capacity to 50 million passengers and 2.6 million tonnes of cargo per year.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has emphasised the importance of resolving any issues preventing the completion of Long Thanh International Airport. The Minister of Public Security Luong Tam Quang stated that Gia Binh International Airport plays an important role in the national airport planning system and will serve as a strategic dual-use facility for the capital region.

Gia Binh International Airport is designed to serve as both the aviation gateway for Hanoi and northern Vietnam, and a key regional transit hub. The airport is expected to enter initial operation by the end of 2026, and will be used for the APEC Summit the following year.

The development of Gia Binh International Airport is a significant step forward for Vietnam's aviation industry, promising to deliver a smart, sustainable, and efficient airport for the future.
