Construction in progress for "Girl Beast," directed by Selma Sunniva, featuring a premier Danish ensemble led by Trine Dyrholm
In the heart of Denmark, production is underway for the highly anticipated psychological drama, 'Girl Beast.' This thought-provoking film, set to premiere in 2026, is a debut feature of Danish filmmaker Selma Sunniva and an adaptation of Cecilie Lind's acclaimed 2022 novel of the same name.
'Girl Beast' is backed by the Danish Film Institute's New Danish Screen initiative, which supports emerging talent, and produced by Maria Moller Kjeldgaard and Ann-Sofie Grondal for Denmark's Manna Film. The film has previously produced successful projects such as Isabella Eklof's "Kalak" and Malene Choi's Berlinale 2023 documentary "The Quiet Migration."
The film follows the story of a young girl named Sara, whose childhood trauma and dysfunctional relationships shape her identity and sexuality during her teenage years. Sunniva, who admires Lind greatly, is looking forward to bringing her novel to life on the silver screen, viewing 'Girl Beast' as a powerful tool to explore why the sexualization of young girls persists in society.
Rebecca Ellen, who was discovered following a casting search of 300 young women, plays the lead role in the film. The film also stars Trine Dyrholm, Melina Raja, Morten Burian, Thure Lindhardt, Christian Tafdrup, Nanna Skaarup Voss, and Josephine Park. It's essential to note that Sunniva is credited as the filmmaker and co-adapter, not a cast member.
Lind, the author of the novel, has expressed her excitement about the film, stating that 'Girl Beast' is in "better hands" with Sunniva. Sunniva's short film An Example played at the Clermont-Ferrand short film festival and won best short film at Denmark's Robert Awards.
'Girl Beast' has support from FilmFyn, DR, and Creative Europe, and was previously presented in the Discovery development strand at Goteborg Film Festival's Nordic Film Market. The film is currently being shot on the Danish island of Funen.
Sunniva has shared that she feels both repelled and drawn to 'Girl Beast,' reflecting her experiences in her teenage years and early twenties. The film promises to be a compelling exploration of societal sicknesses and the internalization of female sexuality, making it a must-watch for audiences worldwide."
