Prague Square Renaming Proposal Honours Iconic Singer Karel Gott

In a significant move, the local district of Prague has put forth a proposal to name a nearby square after the late, legendary Czech singer, Karel Gott. This proposal is currently under consideration by the naming commission of the Czech capital.

Karel Gott, affectionately known as the "Golden Voice of Prague," lived in a villa in the city from 1974 until his passing on October 1, 2019, at the age of 80. His villa served as a testament to his enduring presence in the heart of Prague.

Gott's music, which included timeless hits like "Biene Maja," "Lady Carneval," and "Around the World Once," resonated with audiences for over six decades. He is estimated to have sold 50 million records throughout his illustrious career.

However, a planned museum dedicated to Gott's life and work has faced a temporary halt. Ivana Gottová, his widow, announced on Facebook in August 2025 that the museum's development was postponed due to her health and personal reasons. This decision came after a previous museum dedicated to Gott's life and work in Jevany near Prague, which operated from 2006 to 2009, had to close due to financial difficulties.

Despite these challenges, the proposal to name a square after Karel Gott continues to gather support, reflecting the profound impact he had on Czech culture and music. The decision by the naming commission is eagerly awaited by fans and admirers of the iconic singer.
