Construction begins on the new Papa'aloa playcourt within the community
Community Gathers for Groundbreaking of New Covered Playcourt at Papa'aloa Park
A group of around 40 community members, local politicians, and dignitaries convened at the demolished site of Papa'aloa Gym last Thursday to mark the start of construction for a new covered playcourt.
The event featured a groundbreaking ceremony, followed by a traditional Hawaiian blessing, signifying a significant step forward in the community's efforts to reestablish a central gathering space.
Mayor Kimo Alameda shared his admiration for the strong camaraderie that he and Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma have both experienced through sports and life. Addressing the crowd, Alameda commended the community's resilience in dealing with the closure of the old gym due to safety concerns.
Following the ceremony, Alameda discussed the swift progress of the project with local publication, the Tribune-Herald. He echoed the sentiments of successful collaboration that have led to the rebirth of the building, emphasizing the community's commitment to transforming the site.
The county expects construction of the playcourt to commence on June 2, with an estimated completion within 18 months. During this time, Papa'aloa Park will be closed, and the nutrition program run by the Parks and Recreation Elderly Activities Division will relocate temporarily to Pa'auilo Gym.
The demolition of the vintage plantation-style gym, which had served as Papa'aloa's hub for recreation, safety, and community events, had been a priority for County Councilwoman Heather Kimball since her election in 2022. Despite the community's initial disappointment, Kimball's determination to provide a new recreational facility in the remote area remained steadfast.
