Conservatives triumph, Social Democrats face difficulties
The early 2025 federal election in Germany has resulted in a new government, led by the CDU/CSU alliance as the largest parliamentary group. Baden-Württemberg, a prosperous and politically influential state, plays a strategic role within Germany’s federal framework due to its size, political leaning, and economic importance.
Germany operates under a federal system, where power is divided between the federal government and the sixteen states. Baden-Württemberg participates in federal decisions through the Bundesrat, the upper parliamentary chamber representing Länder interests alongside the Bundestag. The CDU’s lead in the 2025 election suggests that Baden-Württemberg's political weight remains important, potentially shaping government priorities and coalition dynamics.
However, the future of Baden-Württemberg's influence at the federal level remains uncertain, with the departure of Saskia Esken, the federal chairman who comes from Calw. Many party members in Baden-Württemberg consider Esken unsuitable for her role, citing a lack of content and rhetoric, and a lack of instinct for higher tasks. Sascha Binder, the General Secretary of the state SPD, has declared Esken unsuitable for a ministerial position.
In contrast, the southwest CDU is considered the winner of the government formation, with Nina Warken, a rapid riser from the general secretary of the state CDU, appointed as health minister. Manuel Hagel, the party and faction leader, may have played a role in Warken's rapid rise.
Winfried Kretschmann, the Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, expressed regret about the Greens no longer being in charge in Berlin. The only representative from Baden-Württemberg in the current federal government is the Green Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir.
Despite the controversy surrounding Esken, it has been argued that she has integrated the left wing and freed Olaf Scholz's back. Under her tough exterior, Esken is said to have a soft social democratic heart. The future of Esken remains uncertain, but her departure could potentially weaken the southwest SPD's influence in the federal executive committee and cabinet.
