Conservatives applaud as ABC removes Jimmy Kimmel from broadcast after distasteful remarks about Charlie Kirk's potential harm
In a surprising turn of events, Disney has pulled Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", indefinitely following his monologue mocking Charlie Kirk, a conservative commentator. The decision has sparked a heated debate over free speech and censorship.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr defended the ABC affiliates for their action, stating that they were within their rights to preempt Kimmel's program due to the backlash among conservatives. However, the move has been met with criticism from various quarters.
Former CNN anchor Jim Acosta insists that Jimmy Kimmel "deserves better than this" and called him a "class act". Ex-MSNBC host Keith Olbermann accused Disney chief Bob Iger of prostituting themselves for Trump. Comedian Wanda Sykes slammed the move on Instagram, calling it an attack on free people.
Governor JB Pritzker, D-Ill., wrote in support of Kimmel, stating that a free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesn't like what they say. He warned that this could set a dangerous precedent.
CNN's Brian Stelter called ABC's move "so serious" and stated that America is a less free place if late-night comedians cannot do or say what they want. CNN's Van Jones slammed the decision, stating it was a red line crossed for free games.
Liberals on Bluesky declared their support for Jimmy Kimmel, stating it was an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand. Terry Moran, former ABC News correspondent, predicted that the crackdown won't stop with Jimmy Kimmel. Jim Acosta warned that our right to free speech is under attack in this country and must be defended.
The decision has also been accused of caving to the Trump administration and waving the white flag in the battle over free speech. David Frum, The Atlantic staff writer, predicted an attack on Democratic Party fundraising and suppression of Democratic Party speech.
President Donald Trump called Disney's decision to pull Kimmel's show "great news for America." However, the controversy has sparked a larger conversation about the boundaries of free speech and the role of media in a democratic society. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold.
