Consensual Federal Police Inspection on Autobahn A8: Joint Announcement by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Police and the Federal Police Directorate Koblenz Regarding the Operation
In August 2025, the Grand Ducal Police of Luxembourg and the Federal Police Directorate Koblenz agreed on an interim, innovative procedure for coordinated controls on the BAB 8. This new approach aims to minimise the impact of renewed internal German border controls on traffic and to strengthen crime fighting.
Under the interim alternative procedure, the Federal Police are allowed to identify control-relevant vehicles on Luxembourgish territory in advance and control them on German territory away from BAB 8, specifically at the Moseltal parking lot. However, unlike the joint deployment procedure, the interim alternative procedure does not eliminate the single-lane traffic and the speed limit of 20 km/h caused by border control.
The joint deployment procedure, on the other hand, is implemented on the federal motorway BAB 8. This procedure, which is not part of the interim alternative procedure, eliminates the single-lane traffic and the speed limit of 20 km/h caused by the border control. The vehicles to be controlled are directed from the flowing traffic to the control location at the Moseltal parking lot.
It is important to note that the interim alternative procedure only affects the controls of the Federal Police on BAB 8 and does not extend to other tasks or powers within the temporarily reintroduced internal border controls. The joint deployment procedure, on the other hand, is subject to continuous evaluation.
This new coordinated procedure strengthens police cooperation with Luxembourg. The information was originally transmitted by the Federal Police Directorate Koblenz. Press inquiries can be directed to the Public Relations Department of the Federal Police Directorate Koblenz at Phone: 0261/399-0 or Email: [email protected].
The interim innovative procedure will be applied from August 1, 2025. Schengen internal border controls on German territory are being carried out immediately behind the border bridge in Schengen. This joint deployment procedure will be implemented on the federal motorway BAB 8. The interim alternative procedure, however, is not subject to continuous evaluation, unlike the joint deployment procedure.
It's also worth mentioning that the interim alternative procedure does not impact the return of persons whose global entry to Germany is denied. This procedure is designed to streamline border controls and facilitate traffic flow on BAB 8, while ensuring the necessary security measures are in place.
