Connor McDavid's Olympic debut sparks Canada's 5-0 rout over Czechia

Connor McDavid made an instant impact in his Winter Olympics debut, helping Canada crush Czechia 5-0 in their opening match. The captain recorded three assists as five different players found the net in a dominant performance.

McDavid set the tone early, earning his first Olympics point with a pass on Macklin Celebrini's opening goal in the first period. His influence grew as the game wore on, adding two more assists in the third—first on Nathan MacKinnon's goal, then on Nick Suzuki's finish.

Five Canadians scored in the rout: Celebrini, Mark Stone, Bo Horvat, MacKinnon, and Suzuki. Jordan Binnington turned aside all 26 Czech shots for his first Olympics shutout. McDavid led the team with six shots and logged 18:04 of ice time, tying him for the tournament scoring lead alongside Juraj Slafkovsky and Rasmus Dahlin.

Canada now sits at 1-0-0-0 in the preliminary round. Their next test comes against Switzerland.

The victory marked a strong start for Canada, with McDavid's playmaking driving the attack. The team will look to carry this momentum into their matchup with Switzerland as they aim to build on their unbeaten record.
