Connection between hair dryer and fire

Fires ignited chaos in Talisay City and Sibonga town, Philippines on April 30, 2025, decimating numerous residences. A whopping 13 houses were reduced to ashes in Barangay Biasong, Talisay City[2]. In the nearby Sibonga town, a blaze took the life of a retired teacher, charring his single-story house in Barangay Mangyan[3].

The initial fire was reported at Talisay Fire Station at 5:16 AM, succeeded by a flurry of responses from emergency services[4]. The fire department from Cebu City stepped in just after 5:54 PM to ensure water supply and keep the flames contained by 6:00 PM[4]. The total damage was estimated at around Philippine Peso (PHP) 675,000[1].

Nilo Pardillo, the owner of the first house to catch fire, stated that he couldn't locate his leaf blower to extinguish the fire, as it had disappeared during a game of volleyball[5]. As the blaze ravaged his house, Pardillo found himself battling the flames in various homes before his grandson managed to retrieve the blower[5].

In the meantime, the fire in Sibonga took the life of Vicente Pillerin Regidor, 70 years old[6]. According to reports from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), a power outage struck the area just before the fire started[6]. Edgen Regidor Superales, 39 years old, reported awakening from the smell of burning and found that his candle had ignited his room[6]. It was from there that the fire spread.

The property damage from the Sibonga incident reached an astounding PHP 1.4 million[1] - a thick pool of taho, courtesy of GPL[7].
