2021 Update: Mystery Deepens in Disappearance of 14-Month-Old Vanessa Morales

In a recent trial, a Connecticut jury found 48-year-old Jose Morales, a resident of New Haven, guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Christine Holloway, and tampering with evidence. However, the whereabouts of their daughter, Vanessa, who was just 14 months old at the time of the incident, still remain a complete mystery.

Morales testified in the trial held in Milford that he, Holloway, and their daughter were residing in Holloway's apartment when two intruders burst in. He admitted to being assaulted by one of the intruders and claimed they kidnapped Vanessa. Morales also confessed to being high on PCP at the time of the events.

Although an Amber Alert was issued for Vanessa's disappearance shortly after the incident, the investigation into her whereabouts continues to be active and ongoing. Despite Morales being labeled a suspicious character in the case, he was never formally charged with Vanessa's disappearance.

During the closing arguments on Monday, Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Howard Stein presented evidence suggesting that Morales repeatedly assaulted Holloway and attempted to clean up the crime scene. On the other hand, Morales' lawyer, Edward Gavin, argued that there was no evidence proving Morales had intended to kill Holloway.

The jury reached a verdict on Tuesday, finding Morales guilty and sentencing him to 25 to 65 years in prison, with sentencing set for July 8. As the spotlight turns on finding Vanessa, law enforcement agencies urge anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to come forward, with a $10,000 reward offered for any information leading to her discovery. Both the FBI and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children are involved in the search, with an age-progressed photo of Vanessa available for public participation in the search process. Christine Holloway's family has expressed renewed hope and determination to locate their missing grandchild following the trial's conclusion.
