Congress Party Elects New President: Kharge vs Tharoor
The Congress party's presidential election is underway, with Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor as the two candidates. Kharge, a long-time follower of the Gandhi family, is seen as the front-runner. The election, held on Monday, saw a high turnout of around 96 percent among the 9,915 eligible leaders. The counting of votes will commence at 10 AM today at the party's Delhi headquarters.
Kharge entered the race after Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot withdrew his nomination. This election comes three years after Sonia Gandhi temporarily led the party following Rahul Gandhi's resignation. Both candidates have stated that the Gandhi family remains neutral in this election.
Kharge, if elected, would become the first non-Gandhi president of the Congress party in over two decades. Tharoor, meanwhile, has claimed that the odds are stacked against him in the election. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has alleged that false information was spread about Tharoor during the campaign.
The Congress party's internal election is a significant event, with Kharge and Tharoor vying for the top position. The results, to be announced later today, will shape the party's future and leadership dynamics.
