Congress in the U.S. allegedly poised for passage of fresh sanctions against Russia

In recent developments, the United States and Europe are taking decisive steps to impose stricter sanctions on Russia in response to its ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump is increasingly showing interest in supporting Ukraine in its defensive struggle against Russia. This support is evident in his recent announcement that he will send Ukraine Patriot air defense systems. The systems, which will not cost the US anything, will be paid for by the EU.

The push for tougher sanctions against Russia is gaining momentum in the US Congress, with a bipartisan bill being proposed by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal. The bill aims to impose a 500% tariff on goods imported from countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other exports. The measure targets countries like China and India, which account for a significant portion of Russia's energy trade.

The bill has gained momentum recently, with President Trump expressing interest but also seeking flexibility in imposing sanctions. A key challenge is the waiver authority, which would allow the president to waive the tariffs for up to 180 days. Negotiations are ongoing between lawmakers and the White House to settle on the scope of this waiver. Senate leaders anticipate that the bill could be ready for a Senate floor vote by the end of the current work period, which concludes on August 1.

European allies have been supportive of increased sanctions on Russia, viewing the bill as a strategy to hit Russia's customer base and impact its war efforts. Senators Graham and Blumenthal have briefed European allies and Ukraine on the sanctions bill, emphasizing its potential to pressure Russia into negotiations.

Meanwhile, Russia has escalated its military actions against Ukraine, including significant drone and missile attacks on civilian infrastructure. This escalation has heightened pressure on the international community to impose more stringent sanctions. Despite ongoing sanctions, Russia continues to earn substantial revenue from fossil fuel exports.

Ukraine, on the other hand, has accepted a US-proposed ceasefire without conditions, but Russia rejected it, leading to further military escalation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine will provide "full information" on the course of the war and Russia's military capabilities ahead of a visit by US special envoy Keith Kellogg. The Ukrainian President also stated that Ukraine would do everything to shift the war "to the territory of Russia."

In response to these developments, EU envoys are close to agreeing on a new sanctions package against Russia, which would include a lower price cap for Russian oil. The goal is to give the US a "full understanding" of what is needed "to force Russia to peace."

As the situation in Ukraine remains volatile, both the US and Europe are working together to apply pressure on Russia and bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The proposed bipartisan bill in the US Congress, spearheaded by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, aims to impose a 500% tariff on goods imported from countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other exports, targeting countries like China and India. This bill aligns with the community policy of imposing stricter sanctions on countries involved in war-and-conflicts, such as Russia, as a political measure in response to its ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

The ongoing negotiations between lawmakers and the White House regarding the waiver authority in the proposed bill are significant, as they will help shape the employment policy of imposing sanctions, with the potential to impact global general news and geopolitical dynamics.
