Congress Brace for Defeat in Upcoming Delhi Elections According to Fadnavis' Predictions
In a recent development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised concerns about the increase in the number of voters in Maharashtra between the Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections. According to Gandhi, the total number of voters added in Maharashtra in five months was equivalent to the population of a state like Himachal Pradesh.
The Election Commission has promised to respond in writing to Gandhi's points, providing a full factual and procedural matrix. The Commission's response comes after Gandhi's claims that the number of votes received by the MVA constituents did not reduce from Lok Sabha to state Assembly elections, and that the increase in the number of electors was not unusual.
Data published by the election commission shows that the MVA received 60 lakh less votes in the state Assembly election than the Lok Sabha election. However, an official from the state government has stated that the issues raised by Gandhi are not backed by available election data.
From 2019 to 2024 assembly elections, the number of electors increased by 72 lakh. In five months after the 2024 Lok Sabha election, 39 lakh voters were added, with 26 lakh being first-time voters. It is important to note that there were no elections in the state due to Covid and other reasons during this period.
Gandhi also pointed out that in the five years between the 2019 state Assembly election and the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the number of electors increased by 32 lakh. He urged the Election Commission to provide the Opposition parties with a list of voters, their photos, and to come clean on the issue.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ridiculed Gandhi's allegations of irregularities in Maharashtra electoral rolls. Fadnavis stated that Gandhi is doing a "cover fire" as he knows that after the February 8, Delhi Election results, his party will be nowhere in Delhi. Fadnavis also advised Gandhi to introspect instead of blaming the Election Commission for his party's defeat, otherwise there will be no revival of the Congress.
It is worth noting that the Maharashtra state Assembly elections saw the Mahayuti alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, winning 235 out of 288 assembly seats. The MVA, comprising Congress, Shiv Sena(UBT), and NCP (SP), won only 49 seats. The Mahayuti victory came months after the MVA defeated the BJP-led alliance in the Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra.
Rahul Gandhi, along with NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, insinuated that bogus voters were added to the Maharashtra electoral rolls before the state Assembly election last year. However, the official from the state government maintains that the increase in the number of electors was not unusual, with 42 lakh voters added before the 2014 state Assembly election and 63 lakh between 2014 state assembly election and 2019 state assembly election.
The ongoing debate highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the electoral process, with both parties calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. The Election Commission's response to Gandhi's points is eagerly awaited, as it could potentially shed light on the claims made by both parties.
