Conflict-spanning decades honored: city and university salute our correspondent attorney and resistance warrior Fabian von Schlabrendorff within their institutions.

Halle (Saale) is set to honour the end of World War II with a series of events this year, as part of the Cultural Theme Year's programme with the motto "City of Bridges. Coming. Going. Staying." The events, organised by the city, its Stadtmuseum, the Museumsnetzwerk Halle, and various partners, include lectures, tours, and readings, totalling 13 events.

One of the key events is the commemoration of Fabian von Schlabrendorff, a significant figure in German history, known for his involvement in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler during World War II. The event is scheduled for July 26, 2025, at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the city of Halle (Saale).

The event consists of two parts. At 3 PM, author Mario H. Müller will present from his 2023 biography of Fabian von Schlabrendorff at the Stadtmuseum Halle, Große Märkerstraße 10. In the evening, at 7:30 PM, a special discussion will take place at the Kustodie in the Löwengebäude, Universitätsplatz 11. This discussion will feature Maria von Bismarck, daughter of Fabian von Schlabrendorff, and Carl-Friedrich Wentzel, grandson of the executed Teutschenthal farmer Carl Wentzel (1876-1944).

The discussion will focus on how and why we should honour the resistance in a free democracy today, reflecting on Schlabrendorff's role in the German resistance and the broader context of anti-Nazi activities during that period. The events are funded by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Sachsen-Anhalt.

Fabian von Schlabrendorff was a lawyer who studied and lived in Halle, and one of the conspirators in the July 20, 1944, assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler. After the war, he served as a judge on the Federal Constitutional Court from 1967 to 1975.

For definitive information about the events, including participants, you would need to check official announcements from the university or local event organisers. The city provides an overview of all events and further information on a special page 80 years after the war in the Stadtgeschichte section of their website.

The events are being held at various locations in Halle (Saale), with admission to the event being free. The series is part of a program dedicated to the end of the war in Halle (Saale), exploring various aspects of the war's end in the city.
