Conflict Resolution Deadline: Gani Adams Steps In to Mediate between Alaafin and Ooni
In a bid to maintain unity and prevent the reopening of old wounds, Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, has announced his intention to intervene in the ongoing dispute between the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.
The conflict, centred around the conferment of the title "Okanlomo of Yorubaland" on businessman Dotun Sanusi by the Ooni, has been a long-standing issue, with the Alaafin contending that it encroaches on his exclusive traditional authority. In response, the Alaafin issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni, demanding the revocation of the title, which he deemed an affront to his authority. However, the Ooni has remained largely silent on the matter, with his spokesperson dismissing the ultimatum as an "empty threat."
Recognising the importance of preserving Yoruba tradition and maintaining unity, Iba Gani Adams has reached out to Yoruba leaders, urging them to intervene and find a resolution to the impasse between the two monarchs. Adams, who was close to both the palace of Ooni and the late Alaafin before becoming Aare Ona Kakanfo, emphasised the need for amicable resolution of all issues.
In a show of optimism, Adams expressed belief that the crisis will be resolved in no distant time. He also warned that abandoning one's heritage can be detrimental, urging all parties involved to prioritise tradition and unity.
Notable Yoruba leaders, including the Ifa priest Ifayemi Elebuibon, have called for peace and unity, urging both monarchs to prioritise peace over competition. Elebuibon emphasised the intertwined histories of Ile-Ife and Oyo, urging both monarchs to avoid unnecessary conflicts, especially in light of the recent ascension of the Alaafin.
As of now, no formal resolution or mediation outcome has been publicised. The Ooni's spokesperson, Moses Olafare, has stated that the monarch has directed him to ignore the Alaafin's outburst and leave the matter "in the court of public opinion."
The intervention of cultural and political leaders like Iba Gani Adams is being sought to quell the lingering crisis between the Alaafin and the Ooni, as the Yoruba community hopes for a swift and peaceful resolution to preserve their rich cultural heritage and unity.
