Conflict in Ukraine: NATO nations confirm Russian military aircraft activity - potential danger of hostilities
Next week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Senator Marco Rubio are set to meet on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The exact date and location within the UN premises have yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, Russian troops have made territorial gains, specifically in the areas of Shandryholove and Selena Dolina. Ukraine, however, is preparing for a significant increase in its defensive capabilities, with plans to deploy up to 1,000 interception drones daily.
The escalating tensions have not gone unnoticed by international players. The European Union is planning talks about a "drone wall" along its eastern border to protect NATO from Russian drones. Additionally, US senators have introduced a bipartisan bill to expand sanctions against Russia's "shadow fleet" of oil tankers, aiming to limit Vladimir Putin's war financing.
The European Union has also announced a new sanctions package against Russia, marking the 19th such package. This comes as Russia has moved air defense systems from the occupied Mariupol (Ukraine) closer to the Rostov region (Russia) to protect its oil refineries.
In a move towards self-sufficiency, Russia has announced a $5 billion satellite internet project called "Rassvet" as an alternative to SpaceX's Starlink.
On the diplomatic front, the Russian army reportedly captured two Ukrainian villages in the east of the country, Murawka in the Donetsk region and Nowoiwaniwka in Saporischschja. However, Ukraine's Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, reaffirmed Ukraine's support for US President Donald Trump's peace plans, but no talks are currently taking place between Kyiv and Moscow.
Trump himself announced US involvement in peacekeeping in the Ukraine war, stating readiness to support after the war ends. This comes after reports of troops of the Ukrainian military intelligence service attacking a small island in the Black Sea, destroying a Russian multipurpose tracked vehicle.
Concerns about foreign involvement in the conflict continue to grow, with reports suggesting that Russia and Iran are recruiting mercenaries together in the Middle East for the Ukraine war.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the international community remains vigilant, with various nations and organisations taking steps to support peace and deter further escalation.
