In a bid to pursue peace in Ukraine, a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky was held in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2021. However, the summit, themed "Pursuing Peace," did not result in a confirmed agreement regarding a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Despite the high-profile gathering, no details of the negotiations at the summit have been disclosed. The President of the United States expressed his intention to stop the massacres in Ukraine, but a ceasefire agreement was not announced during the meeting.

The meeting was aimed at securing a ceasefire on the ground in Ukraine and preparing a future meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky. However, the summit was compared to the Munich conference of 1938, where it was feared the United States might abandon Ukraine to Russia.

The discussions focused on global security, the Donbas region, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Putin demanded territorial concessions for peace, while Trump urged an unconditional ceasefire. The President of the United States was reportedly not satisfied if a ceasefire was not achieved on the day of the meeting.

In contrast to the 2021 meeting, a confirmed meeting on August 15, 2025, in Anchorage was exclusively between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky did not participate in these talks.

The 2025 meeting was primarily seen as an attempt by the U.S. to reestablish dialogue channels with Russia amid the ongoing war. However, it was criticized for excluding Ukraine from the talks and was unlikely to resolve the conflict directly. Putin, during the meeting, rejected the idea of an unconditional ceasefire and insisted that Ukraine must abandon four partially occupied regions annexed by Russia as a precondition for peace.

As of now, it remains unclear if negotiations have progressed. Peace in the short term appears to be delayed. The summit in 2021 was described as a clear failure for Donald Trump, with the conflict in Ukraine continuing unabated.
