Conflict in Gaza: Hamas endorses truce agreement akin to Israel's previously accepted plan, according to Qatar
In a recent development, Hamas has accepted a new ceasefire proposal that involves a two-month truce and provisions for aid to be delivered to Gaza. The proposal, which was announced following Egyptian and Qatari mediation in Cairo, almost entirely replicates a previous plan approved by Israel.
The current situation suggests Israel's response remains uncertain or cautious, pending further political and security assessments. It is important to note that the previous round of indirect talks in Doha failed in July, and Israel had accepted a ceasefire proposal before rejecting the amendments made by Hamas.
The new ceasefire proposal, if accepted by Israel, could significantly de-escalate the conflict in Gaza by enabling hostage releases and opening negotiations for a lasting truce. However, previous ceasefires have broken down due to mutual distrust and unmet conditions, so the potential impact depends heavily on the willingness of both sides and mediators to enforce and sustain the agreement.
The diplomatic push comes amidst the failure of efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to achieve a lasting ceasefire in the 22-month war in the Gaza Strip. The US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, proposed the framework providing for an initial 60-day ceasefire and the phased release of the October 7 hostages in past talks.
Majed al-Ansari, the spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the above details. The Qatari foreign minister has pleaded that a humanitarian catastrophe will occur if an agreement is not reached now.
It is worth mentioning that the Israeli army is preparing to conquer the city of Gaza and neighboring refugee camps. The Israeli army's plans contrast sharply with the peaceful intentions of the ceasefire proposal.
The new Israeli plan aims at ending the Hamas conflict and freeing all hostages. However, the Israeli government has not yet responded to the new ceasefire proposal. The silence from Israel leaves the future of the ceasefire proposal uncertain.
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and a brighter future for the people of Gaza.
