Conflict ignites at Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, marked by Cambodians launching slingshots and Thai officials getting hurt.
In a tense escalation of border tensions, the Royal Thai Army (RTA) clashed with around 200 Cambodian protesters at Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, in Sa Kaeo's Khok Sung district, on Wednesday.
The incident began at 3:40 pm, with Cambodian protesters crossing the Cambodia-Thailand border to dismantle Thai security barriers. In response, Thai riot control officers were deployed, using tear gas and rubber bullets at 4:20 pm, forcing both sides to retreat.
Cambodian protesters retaliated with wooden sticks, stones, and slingshots, causing injuries. The clash continued, with Thai forces using Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD) to disperse the crowd.
The Cambodian side retreated while continuing to shout insults across the border. The departure of the Interim Observer Team (IOT) invited by Cambodia prompted Thai troops to rebuild the barbed wire fence, leading to the mobilization of Cambodian villagers to disrupt the operation.
Prior to the clash, Cambodian authorities had brought villagers to protest against Thailand's installation of barbed wire and defensive obstacles along the frontier. The clash occurred as Thai army troops, police, and local officials were already deployed in the area to respond to the situation.
By 5:00 pm, Thai forces had reinforced the barrier with additional barbed wire and tires. Thai security forces remain on high alert and continue to closely monitor the situation at the border.
Two more landmine sites were discovered by the Thai military, with evidence suggesting they were targeted by Cambodia. This latest incident underscores the ongoing tension between the two countries and the need for diplomatic resolution.
