Conflict between KWAM1 and Emmanson: Peter Obi Accuses Keyamo of Displaying Double Standards, Demanding Accountability from Him
News Article: Peter Obi Calls for Explanation Over Airline Incident Disparities
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has raised concerns over the apparent disparity in the handling of two airline incidents by the Nigerian authorities. In a statement, Obi expressed his displeasure over the treatment of Comfort Emmanson in the Ibom Air incident, which he described as a demonstration of double standards and inadequacies in the country's security forces.
In the Ibom Air incident, Emmanson was allegedly physically assaulted and forcibly removed from a plane after refusing to turn off her phone as instructed by the crew. The incident led to widespread public sympathy and support for Emmanson, with calls for more balanced treatment and concerns about abuse of authority by airline staff. Emmanson was arrested, arraigned, but later discharged by a Lagos court.
In contrast, the ValueJet incident, involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1, was treated more as a disciplinary matter. KWAM1 attempted to board a flight with alcohol and caused a perceived disruption, but the incident did not provoke the same level of public outcry or legal challenge.
Obi criticized the double standards in the justice system, stating that it is not just about Comfort Emmanson. He called for a society that upholds good conduct and decent living as a measure of success. Obi emphasized that justice must be fair, equal, and served to all citizens, regardless of their status.
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, publicly supported Emmanson and considered appointing her to an ambassadorial role, signaling a sympathetic stance toward passengers' rights and condemning excessive punitive measures by airlines. Other aviation authorities like the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority emphasized the need for passengers to comply with crew instructions to avoid such incidents but also recognized the importance of fair treatment and due process in resolving disputes.
The divergence in treatment appears driven by public reaction, severity of physical mistreatment, and the government's more active intervention in the Ibom Air case, contrasted with a comparatively routine disciplinary handling of the ValueJet matter. The Ibom Air case has generated debate on airline passenger rights, the use of force by airline personnel, and the appropriateness of indefinite bans without opportunities for redress, with calls for regulatory review to ensure fairness.
Obi apologized to the airline crew who were assaulted in the Ibom Air incident, but expressed displeasure over the treatment of Emmanson, who was allegedly stripped in public. He called for a country where justice is fair and equal, especially for women who are seen as weaker. However, the statement did not provide any details about the current status of Emmanson or the other offender.
Obi's statement does not mention the identity of the individual who disrupted the second airline incident involving KWAM1. The statement also does not discuss any apology to the airline crew in the incident involving KWAM1. The Labour Party presidential candidate has called on the Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities to provide an explanation for the double standards in their adjudication.
