Conflict at K20/21 Düsseldorf: Chagall's Modern Art and the Queer Perspective

The K20, a renowned municipal art gallery in Düsseldorf, built in 1967, is set for a significant transformation. The gallery will close its doors for a two-year period starting from 2026, as it undergoes much-needed renovations.

During this time, the K20 will present itself as a "nomadic art hall," with numerous small exhibitions taking place in various city districts. This move is aimed at keeping the artistic spirit alive and engaging with the community, even amidst the renovation process.

As the K20 prepares for its transformation, it is currently lacking a guiding spirit following the unexpected resignation of its dedicated director, Gregor Jansen, at the end of last year. No new director has been named as of February 2026.

One of the final exhibitions before the closure is Yoko Ono's solo exhibition, which tells the art stories of the widow of John Lennon, who always pursued her own unique path. The exhibition is on display until mid-March.

Another noteworthy exhibition is Sheila Hicks' current display at the K20, featuring her woolly objects. Following Hicks' exhibition, an exhibition by the 1844-founded Düsseldorf Artists' Association (VdDK) is announced, titled "We're just getting started" and will run from March 15 to May 25.

In the meantime, the K21 will host an exhibition of Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger, a painter, psychoanalyst, philosopher, and peace activist, from February 22nd to August 31st. The K21 will also feature an exhibition of Marc Chagall's works, one of the most famous and beloved painters of all time, from March 15th to August 10th.

Susanne Gaensheimer, the director of Kunstsammlung NRW, has shaken up the K20 and K21 museums, challenging the old white men of the modern art Olympus with feminine and non-European power. Gaensheimer, who was ranked number 18 on Monopol's list of the 100 most important personalities in the art world, has undoubtedly left her mark on these institutions.

It's important to note that the K20, currently, is not barrier-free and needs to be future-proofed. The institute aims to address this issue during its renovation period.

As for upcoming exhibitions at K21, the K20 is not mentioned. However, visitors can look forward to a vibrant and diverse lineup of art at both K20 and K21 throughout the year.
