Confirmed Discussion on Emi Martinez and Manchester United: Perspectives shared by Fabrizio Romano, offering a clear update on potential transfer
In a surprising turn of events, Emi Martinez's potential move to Manchester United appears to be on hold, with no official bid made by the Red Devils.
According to recent reports, Aston Villa are open to selling Martinez due to pressure from UEFA and the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) deadline. Martinez, a key player in Aston Villa's rise under manager Unai Emery, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
It was revealed that Manchester United had considered offloading several players, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, to free up funds for potential transfers. However, United have not made any bid for Martinez, despite the goalkeeper being ranked at no.9 in the list of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Earlier this summer, it was reported that Martinez was very close to joining Manchester United, with coach Ruben Amorim and Martinez himself both interested in the move. However, Amorim could not convince the United board of the urgency to sign a top goalkeeper. The club did attempt a loan approach for Martinez, which Aston Villa quickly rejected given Martinez's contract until 2029 and Villa's unwillingness to sell to a Premier League rival.
The United board decided against increasing their wage bill for Martinez, who reportedly earns over £200,000 per week, and instead shifted focus toward targeting a younger goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that United's interest in Martinez is legitimate but recent activity is limited. No official transfer bid or deal is currently proceeding, and no club-to-club negotiations have taken place between Manchester United and Aston Villa regarding Martinez.
Despite the stalled transfer, Martinez could be open to joining Manchester United as a short-term fix. The Red Devils are looking to add a goalkeeper upgrade to their squad, and Martinez's four years left on his contract make him an attractive prospect.
However, Martinez's situation is complicated by Aston Villa's financial requirements. The club has not received any official bid from Manchester United, and it remains to be seen if United will make a move in the future.
In the meantime, Manchester United are pursuing the signing of Bryan Mbeumo, with the transfer market still open for business.
