Swedish Tennis Legend Bjorn Borg Reveals Struggles with Addiction and Cancer Diagnosis in Memoir
Bjorn Borg, the six-time Wimbledon champion and six-time French Open winner, has opened up about his personal struggles in his new memoir, "Heartbeats". The book, written by the 69-year-old former tennis player, delves into his battles with addiction and his personal demons.
In the book, Borg reveals that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2023. He also discusses the worst of his addiction, which occurred when he lived in Milan in the early 1990s, while he was married to Italian singer Loredana Berte.
Borg's addiction began in the early 1980s with his first experience of cocaine at the iconic New York nightclub, Studio 54. He expressed his knowledge about doping existing among juniors in tennis, but did not provide any further details about any specific cases.
The book also touches upon Borg's personal life, including his collapse in the Netherlands in 1996 just ahead of an exhibition tournament. Upon waking in the hospital, Borg found his father standing next to him.
In the book, Borg also speaks about Jannik Sinner and his decision to resume working with his former fitness trainer Umberto Ferrara, despite a previous suspension. Borg stated that he finds it strange that Sinner rehired his former fitness coach after a suspension. However, Borg did not elaborate on Sinner's doping case.
It is worth noting that Borg has not played tennis in six years and has a regular check-up every six months to monitor for a cancer recurrence.
Borg's memoir provides a fascinating insight into the life of one of tennis' greatest champions, offering a raw and honest account of his personal struggles and triumphs. The book serves as a reminder that even the most successful individuals can face personal challenges and demons.
