Article Title: Left in Thuringia Insists on Third Free Kindergarten Year for Double Budget

Vibe: Casual, informative, and engaging

For the Thuringian Left, a third year of free kindergarten is a key demand in their proposed budget for 2026/2027. "We're holding ‘em to their promises," says Left education politician Ulrike Grosse-Roethig, speaking to the German Press Agency in Erfurt. "Not only that, but we expect the free kindergarten year promised in the 2025 budget to be included in the 2026/27 budget as agreed."

Thuringia's government is currently drafting a double budget, and their coalition lacks a majority in parliament, leaving them at odds with opposition from Left and AfD. The budget for 2025 was only passed with help from the Left. One part of this compromise was the introduction of a third free kindergarten year, starting in 2027.

The Ministry of Education has yet to finalize the budget details. According to a spokesperson, the share of the federal infrastructure special asset has not been accounted for. As a result, the fate of the third free kindergarten year remains unclear. "Our goal during the budget discussions within the state government is to meet the financial ministry's guideline values and the consolidation needs associated with them," the ministry stated.

The Left faction has already submitted a proposal for a revised kindergarten law, which has been sitting in the education committee without being heard, according to Grosse-Roethig. "If the state government decides to renege on agreements from the 2025 budget, it raises questions about our ability to reach agreements for the 2026/27 double budget," she adds.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Education mentioned that revision of the kindergarten law is planned, but they didn't specify whether it would address the question of fee-free childcare. Instead, the focus seems to be on preparing for the introduction of language tests in Thuringian kindergartens.

(Insights: The current status of the Thuringian Left's condition for a third free-of-charge kindergarten year in the double budget 2026/2027 is unclear. Without recent updates or official statements, it's difficult to say whether the government will meet this demand.)

While the Thuringian Left continues to push for a third free kindergarten year in the 2026/2027 budget, the government's coalition faces opposition in parliament. The Left's demand is influenced by previous agreements made during the drafting of the 2025 budget, even though the Ministry of Education has yet to finalize the details for the 2026/2027 budget – including the fate of the third free kindergarten year. The lack of clarity in this aspect raises questions about the government's commitment to keeping Agreement from the 2025 budget, potentially impacting future negotiations for the double budget. This situation is further complicated by the Ministry of Education's focus on implementing new language tests in Thuringian kindergartens, which may divert attention from addressing the question of fee-free childcare.
