**European Countries Express Concern Over Georgia's Political Crisis**

A political crisis is unfolding in Georgia, with opposition leaders facing imprisonment and accusations of authoritarianism by the opposition and human rights organisations. Despite the European Union (EU) not publicly accusing the Georgian government, several European countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and France, have spoken out against the repression of democracy in Georgia.

On July 11, 2025, the foreign ministers of 17 European countries, including the aforementioned nations, along with the EU High Representative, issued a joint statement expressing deep concern about the deteriorating political situation in Georgia. They strongly condemned the politically motivated imprisonment and detention of opposition leaders, describing it as efforts to stifle political opposition just months ahead of local elections.

The statement also denounced arbitrary arrests and the increased repression of civil society representatives, peaceful protesters, and independent journalists. These actions, they warned, are contributing to the dismantling of democracy and pushing Georgia toward authoritarianism—contradicting European norms and values.

The ministers highlighted recent legislative changes aimed at suppressing independent civil society and legitimate protest. They pointed out that these developments have led to a "considerable downgrading" of relations with Georgia, including reductions in assistance and cooperation.

The joint statement urged Georgian authorities to release detained opposition figures and activists immediately and to reverse repressive measures to restore democracy. The European ministers warned that if Georgia continues on this anti-democratic path, they are prepared to use a range of unilateral and multilateral tools to hold the government accountable.

This unified European response demonstrates significant concern from Germany, the UK, France, and their allies about the regression of democratic standards in Georgia and the broader implications for regional stability and European values. However, the EU itself has not publicly accused the Georgian government, announced any plans to intervene, or issued travel advisories due to the current political crisis.

The crisis in Georgia has escalated due to the sentencing of opposition politicians and the halt of the EU membership process. Thousands of people took to the streets in mass demonstrations against the Georgian government, with the authorities violently dispersing these protests. The opposition and protesters accuse the government of sliding into authoritarianism and cozying up to Russia.

The legal proceedings against the Georgian opposition are viewed as politically motivated by human rights organisations. The former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, was arrested in 2021 on charges of abuse of power. The EU has not condemned the Georgian government for perceived steps back from democratic reforms and towards greater government control.
