Hong Kong is set to welcome a new addition to its live music scene this autumn. TIDES, a purpose-built live music venue, is opening at The Whampoa shopping centre in Hung Hom. The venue, initiated, funded, designed, and operated by Live Nation, will cater to the demand for live music events in the city and fill a critical gap in its infrastructure.

A Purpose-Built Venue for Professional-Grade Performances

With a standing capacity of 1,500, TIDES is equipped with touring-grade sound, lighting, and flexible staging. This makes it an ideal venue for professional-grade live music performances and mid-scale events. Stephanie Bax, Live Nation's president of venue development in Asia, announced the new venue on Wednesday.

The Whampoa complex, located in Kowloon, will be the new home for TIDES. The iconic ship-shaped building will provide a unique backdrop for the concerts and events that will take place at the venue.

Addressing a Venue Gap in Hong Kong

The opening of TIDES comes at a time when Hong Kong has been lacking mid-sized concert spaces. With only small clubs and the large Kai Tak Stadium as options, TIDES is poised to fill this gap. Joanna Yuen, Live Nation's managing director in Hong Kong, stated that the new venue is aimed at catering to the demand for live music events in the city.

The 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium, which opened in March as part of the government's efforts to boost the city's economy through hosting mega-events, will complement TIDES. Together, they will offer a range of options for live music enthusiasts in Hong Kong.

A Boost for Hong Kong's Mega-Event Economy

The opening of TIDES is part of Hong Kong's efforts to develop a mega-event economy. Stephanie Bax stated that Hong Kong's energy was a significant reason for choosing the city for the new venue. TIDES is expected to host around 250 event days annually and will add to the existing live music scene in the city.

In summary, TIDES is a purpose-built live music venue with a standing capacity of 1,500. It is located at The Whampoa shopping centre in Hung Hom and is aimed at filling the gap in Hong Kong's live music infrastructure between small clubs and large stadiums like Kai Tak Stadium. Live Nation plays a central role in its development, having initiated the project, fully funded it, designed the venue entirely in-house, and will operate it. TIDES marks Hong Kong's first dedicated mid-sized music space purpose-built to host professional touring artists and enhance the city's live entertainment ecosystem.
