Tour de France Femmes: Niewiadoma-Phinney Secures Third Consecutive Podium Finish
The final stage of the Tour de France Femmes saw a dramatic turn of events, with Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) managing to secure a third consecutive podium finish despite a setback during stage 9.
Niewiadoma-Phinney and Cedrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly) were involved in a crash prior to the final climbs, disrupting their podium hopes. However, Niewiadoma-Phinney quickly remounted after the crash and managed to ride her way back to the front group.
The crash, which occurred with 68.4km remaining in the race as they reached the base of the Col de Joux-Plane, caused a delay and made the race harder for both riders. Niewiadoma-Phinney had blood on her left knee but her determination and resilience saw her get back into the GC group, ultimately securing her third place in the final overall standings.
Kerbaol, a strong descender, also aimed to move up using the route's technical downhills, but the crash and subsequent delay hindered her efforts. She finished 8th overall after a strong effort throughout the Tour.
The final stage was a 1.24.1km race from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel Les Portes du Soleil and included three climbs: Côte d'Araches-la-Frasse, Col de Joux-Plane, and Col du Corbier.
At the time of the crash, Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime) was leading the race, having reached the ascent first after attacking an earlier breakaway. Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) was in second place, 2:37 minutes behind Pauline-Ferrand-Prévot (Visma-Lease a Bike), who held the yellow jersey going into the final stage.
