Germans in Dubai discuss anxiously about home matters - Concerned Germans in Dubai engage in anxious discussions
The tense US-Iran conflict has crept into the relaxed daily lives of the expatriate German community in Dubai. A WhatsApp group previously used for discussing business startups in Dubai, tips for craftsmen, and waterfront property deals now echoes with discussions on war tactics, US military bases, and flight cancellations. Despite some members' attempts to downplay the severity, the war has indisputably touched their doorstep.
The atmosphere in the group fluctuates between apprehension, diligence, and a desperate hope to divert attention away from the war, as many have left Germany to escape the gloomy atmosphere back home. However, confronting the reality of war on their new front yard might be an unsettling experience for some.
Dubai's Flights Under Siege
Discussions concerning flight interruptions have reached a fever pitch among expatriates. One member asserted in the group last week, "I've heard flights will be cancelled from today." Another responded, "Really???", prompting a soothing reply, "Don't panic. It's always sensationalized in Germany." The fears were not without foundation, as several flights between the United Arab Emirates and other major cities have been affected.
For instance, British Airways cancelled some flights to Dubai over the weekend, and hundreds of passengers on British Airways flights destined for Dubai reportedly spent nine hours in their planes before landing in Zurich instead, as reported by The Guardian. Singapore Airlines also halted flights between Singapore and Dubai, while Air France KLM ceased flights to Dubai. Lufthansa, on the other hand, continues to fly but is closely monitoring the situation.
Quiet Amidst the Storm
Despite the tension, the group's members attempt to maintain calm, posting gamely about lucrative deals on beachfront apartments in an attempt to steer the conversation away from politics and war. After all, reports on pickpockets in Lucerne manage to draw eight likes from the group, suggesting that the group still seems more enthused about discussing trivial matters. However, the reality of the US and Iran facing each other head-on finds fewer supporters.
A group member shared their views before the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming, "Trump has set aside time for 14 days. Everyone is keeping an eye on the sidelines as he's not as much of a warmonger as Germany and others." This post sparked controversy among at least one group member, who labeled it as "highly distorted." The member tried to bring some balance to the discussion, presenting various scenarios and concluding, "Do you need to stockpile now? No. But perhaps get a couple more cans. It won't hurt. Maybe even some charcoal tablets if you want to take it a step further. There's no need to panic. But those who think the probability is 0% haven't understood geopolitics."
As one of the group administrators stepped in, requesting that politics and war discussions be banned, the focus once again shifted to upscale residential properties.
