Unpredictable American diplomacy on display once more: latest encounter between US president and South African leader steeped in baseless conspiracy theories.

Conceived Opinion: Trump's aggressive Oval Office exchanges signify a concerning shift in U.S. diplomatic proceedings

In May 2025, a contentious meeting between South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and then-US President Donald Trump resulted in a heated exchange over allegations of violence against white farmers in South Africa, which Trump perceived as evidence of a so-called "white genocide."

During the encounter, Trump presented Ramaphosa with a video containing images of white crosses along a South African road and Black activists alleged to be calling for violence against white farmers. Trump argued that the crosses represented over 1,000 white farmers killed, implying that they were disproportionately targeted in South Africa's crime epidemic.

Ramaphosa, visibly taken aback, immediately refuted these allegations and emphasized South Africa's constitutional guarantees for land ownership. He also highlighted the fact that most violent crime victims in his country were black. The intended constructive dialogue to advance investment and trade quickly degenerated into a tense confrontation, casting a long, dark shadow over the visit.

This incident was not an isolated one. It mirrored the brutal inquisition faced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and exemplified a pattern that characterized Trump's Oval Office diplomacy.

Critics accused Trump of exerting pressure on Ramaphosa with these allegations, which South African officials, journalists, and scholars strongly disputed. They argued that there was no credible evidence supporting the claim of thousands of white farmers being killed or targeted specifically. South Africa experiences high crime rates that affect all racial groups, and while white South Africans comprise about 7.3% of the population, they own a significant portion of farmland (72%), a disparity with historic and economic roots.

The controversy is closely tied to broader political tensions, including South Africa’s legislation allowing the government to expropriate land without compensation under certain conditions, a policy intended to redress historic land inequalities. Trump's invocation of the "white genocide" conspiracy theory, rooted in white nationalist rhetoric, was thus viewed as a perilous trap or ambush by Ramaphosa, leveraging misinformation to push a political agenda during their diplomatic engagement.

  1. The incident involving South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and then-US President Donald Trump highlights the intersection between politics, diplomacy, and general news, as Trump's allegations of "white genocide" in South Africa mirrored a pattern seen in his Oval Office diplomacy.
  2. The controversy surrounding the alleged violence against white farmers in South Africa also intertwines with policy-and-legislation debates, as the government's strategy to expropriate land without compensation under certain conditions has fueled international discussions about race, equity, and trade.
  3. The contentious meeting between Ramaphosa and Trump also demonstrated the impact of war-and-conflicts rhetoric, such as the "white genocide" conspiracy theory, on diplomatic relations, casting doubt on the potential for successful trade and investment agreements.
