Compulsive Gamer Anime Sequel: Kakegurui Returns for a Second Season

In the world of animated adaptations, the anticipation for a second season of Kakegurui continues to grow, despite the limited amount of original source material left.

Originally a popular manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, Kakegurui has captivated audiences with its unique blend of gambling, power dynamics, and high school drama. The television series adaptation, directed by Yuichiro Hayashi, first aired in Japan last year.

The plot revolves around students attending the Hyakkaou Private Academy, a school for the wealthy and privileged, where the social hierarchy is determined through gambling games. The poorest students are seen as the slaves, while the richest students become their masters. A new student arrives at the school, who loves to gamble for the pure thrill of it, adding an intriguing twist to the power dynamics.

The first season of the show used five volumes of the written content, leaving three remaining for the second season. In the last episode, the show protagonist, Yumeko Jabami, faced off against the President of the Student Council, Kirari Momobami, in a high stakes game of tarot.

However, the decision to commission a second season has left fans divided. Some are excited for more of the show, with Reddit user MetaThpr4h stating "S1 was fun to watch so I'm definitely in for more. Time for more gamblergasms!" Others are concerned about the tight margin for future seasons to have sufficient new content to adapt and thrive strictly from the main manga storyline.

Critics suggest that a large amount of filler content could be used for the second season to give it more body. Meanwhile, Reddit user fishboy0099 suggests that there may be enough content for around 8 or 9 episodes, with the possibility of another volume of material being written but not yet released.

The air date for the first episode of the second season has yet to be confirmed. However, speculation arises that the prequel spin-off manga series called Kakegurui Twin could soon be put into development as a new anime series, providing additional narrative material.

Interestingly, the live-action Netflix series Bet based on Kakegurui was recently renewed for a second season, despite some criticism that the show diverges somewhat from the manga and anime. This may allow creative flexibility beyond the limited manga volumes remaining.

Kakegurui has been published in Square Enix's Gangan Joker since 2014, and as of March 2025, the manga is currently at Volume 19. With multiple spin-offs, including Kakegurui Twin, the availability of additional narrative material may ensure that Kakegurui continues to captivate audiences for seasons to come.

The animated adaptation of Kakegurui, known for its blend of gambling, power dynamics, and high school drama, might find inspiration for new seasons in the form of a potential casino-themed blog or movie-and-TV tie-ins, given the fan's enthusiasm and the creative flexibility offered by the live-action series Bet's renewal.
