Meeting up in the city center, Davis Alexander greets the waiter in French, a nod to his multi-lingual prowess. As Alexander settles in, his Montreal Alouettes backpack hits the floor, revealing the telltale signs of a hardcore fan—a t-shirt displaying the vintage Alouettes emblem from the '70s.
In football discussions with the new starting quarterback from the team, Alexander's face lights up, and his eyes sparkle. It's no surprise; football reigns supreme in his world. "My family are die-hard Broncos de Denver fans," he proudly states, connecting the dots of his football frenzy-infused pedigree.
Evenings with his twin brother Dillon often revolved around "Madden" matches and football games on TV. Their passion for the oval ball sculpted Alexander's competitive personality, as testified by Dillon, who reached out a day post-interview in Seattle. "I was 4, he was 8, and already he was intent on defeating me at video games—even if he didn't understand them," Dillon recalls, foreshadowing Alexander's single-minded determination that verges on obsession.
The early '90s saw Alexander dabble in baseball, spending his days as an ardent New York Yankees fan and pitcher. Frustration would bubble up when he let an open hit slip by, causing his father no small amount of irritation.
Sport held a Sacred status in the Alexander household, serving as an educational tool, lifestyle guidebook, and family glue. However, that didn't deter his family from moving residences frequently due to his parents' divorce.
Growing up on the Gridiron
Learning the ropes in Oakland, California, amidst tougher times, honed Alexander's football skills. Despite the hardships, his family always managed to maintain a comfortable lifestyle, thanks to his father's construction work, his mother's role as a credit officer, and his stepmother's stint at Microsoft.
"My mother wanted us to experience and learn football in a challenging environment, to witness real life," he recalls, his voice tinged with nostalgia. One fateful practice session, a teammate was shot, underscoring the stark reality of his neighborhood.
For the next decade, Alexander called picturesque Gig Harbor, Washington, home. This seemingly idyllic small town, just 45 minutes southwest of Seattle, boasted a tight-knit community, where weekly gatherings occurred at the marina. Local businesses recognized their regulars, and high school football team members strutted around town like local celebrities.
Friday nights were always reserved for stadium action. With a crowd of 10,000—5,000 of whom attended the games—the town resembled a dreamscape, as Alexander remembers, savoring a spiced-up smoked meat pizza.
However, the luxury of living in this picturesque setting didn't come without a price. Alexander's stepmother spent hours commuting to work every day, driving back and forth for a total of five hours. This selfless sacrifice taught Alexander the value of hard work, grit, and determination.
When he ventured into the professional world, Alexander began to recognize the immense privilege afforded by his upbringing. He crossed paths with teammates who faced challenges much beyond his own, inspiring in him a deep-rooted gratitude.
"My father always told me I was the best thing in the world. It felt like a joke, but he was serious," Alexander reflects, pausing momentarily in his pizza-fueled reminiscing. His mother's words also echoed in his mind, reminding him to stay humble and grounded in the face of his success.
Then, at the tail-end of August 2024, his father, Matt, breathed his last at 56 years old, succumbing to lung cancer. Since then, Alexander has striven to make his father proud—a legacy he continues to honor with every game and every accomplishment.
