The Holy Cross Figure Skating Club made its debut in the collegiate figure skating world last weekend, participating in a competition hosted by MIT. The event, held after the tragedy of American Airlines Flight 5342, saw a unique atmosphere with skaters and coaches grieving and remembering those they lost.

Despite some unanticipated difficulties, the team performed well in their first competition. Co-Captain Karina Myers '27 stated that competing at MIT was a milestone for Holy Cross figure skating and that the team is committed to growing stronger and showing their competitiveness.

The competition was a part of the Welcome Back programs for the first week back on campus, organised by the Campus Activity Board. Dozens of Holy Cross students enjoyed ice skating on the Worcester Common to start the semester.

Student bands also had the opportunity to compete against each other at Battle of the Bands for the chance to open for the Spring Concert artist, whose name, at the time of writing, is still yet to be announced. Ten student bands competed at Battle of the Bands.

The Holy Cross Figure Skating team competed in a total of five events, including Pattern Dances, Team Maneuvers, and a Freestyle program. This is the first year that the team has had a coach, a budget, structured practices, and competitions. Coach Annabelle Rie, '26, was impressed with the team's adaptability and expressed excitement for the next competition in March.

The Holy Cross Figure Skating Club is a relatively recently established club at Holy Cross, and it majorly grew in size at the outset of the academic year from just two members. The team is looking forward to their next competition, the 2025 Pioneer Challenge Cup hosted by Sacred Heart at the beginning of March.

As a relatively new or local figure skating organization with limited media exposure or documented history online, the Holy Cross Figure Skating Club's background and future plans can best be explored through their official communications, such as their website, social media, or direct contact with club representatives.
