In the heart of Rome, Italy, on August 3, 2025, Pope Leo XIV led a monumental event, the Jubilee of Youth, attracting over 800,000 young pilgrims from 146 countries. This gathering, a follow-up to a similar event under Pope John Paul II, 25 years ago, marked a significant moment in the Catholic Church’s Jubilee year, celebrated every 25 years.
The event was an open-air prayer vigil, with large-scale prayers and Eucharistic adoration taking centre stage. The vibrant participation was reminiscent of a modern-day revival, earning the event the moniker "Catholic Woodstock" from Italian broadcaster Rai.
Pilgrims, many of whom had travelled from central Rome for the venue in Tor Vergata, were prepared with water, suncream, and backpacks. As the day progressed, they were treated to performances by various musical and dance groups.
Pope Leo XIV carried a large wood cross during the event, symbolising hope for the future. His homily and speeches encouraged young people to embrace life’s deeper meaning, turn their spiritual thirst into an encounter with God, and avoid superficiality.
His Q&A session offered personal guidance on faith, vocation, and friendship with Christ, addressing the youth’s search for purpose and clarity. This direct communication was widely received as inspiring and heartfelt.
Approximately 1,000 priests were available, with 200 white gazebos serving as makeshift confessional booths. The pope met and prayed with travellers accompanying an 18-year-old Egyptian pilgrim who had tragically passed away on Friday night.
The pope's arrival by helicopter caused a wave of cheers and tears among the young, screaming pilgrims lining his route. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the pilgrims in a video message.
Many pilgrims planned to camp overnight for a Sunday morning mass led by the pope. The Jubilee of Youth signified a large-scale pastoral outreach, aiming to strengthen the faith and moral commitment of young Catholics worldwide, invigorating the Church’s future by fostering a closer relationship between youth and their spiritual mission.
The event was not without sadness, as news of a young woman's heart attack on a bus while returning to her lodging from an event in Rome was reported by Rai News. Despite this, the spirit of unity, faith, and hope remained palpable throughout the gathering.
