Competitor pulls out of US Open mixed doubles tournament bracket
In a surprising turn of events, rising tennis star Jannik Sinner was forced to retire from the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz due to illness. The Italian player went 5-0 down in the first set before deciding to withdraw.
Sinner had expressed his love for Grand Slams, stating they are the main tournaments for his season and career. However, the illness struck him on the eve of the Cincinnati final, causing him to miss out on a potential title. Sinner issued a statement saying he would definitely play singles at the US Open in New York, but remained silent about his participation in the mixed doubles event.
The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, organised in a new shortened format that brings together the world's best singles players, was set to start on Sunday in New York. Sinner and Katerina Siniakova, who were scheduled to participate, had to withdraw due to Sinner's health issues. As a result, the American duo of Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison will replace them in the tournament.
Collins and Harrison made a strong start in the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, defeating Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic in their opening match. They will face Bencic and Zverev again in the first round of the tournament.
Sinner, who is participating in the US Open singles event, anticipates the tournament to be a challenging one, but is looking forward to it if he is physically and mentally prepared. Unfortunately, no information was provided about Siniakova's current health status.
The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship is played on Tuesday and Wednesday, providing an exciting conclusion to the Grand Slam event. With Collins and Harrison's strong start, they will undoubtedly be contenders for the title.
