Indianapolis Colts Name Daniel Jones as Starting Quarterback for 2025 NFL Season

The Indianapolis Colts have made their decision regarding their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 NFL season. After a fierce competition, Daniel Jones has been officially named the starter, edging out Anthony Richardson who will serve as the backup.

Jones, who is entering his seventh NFL season at the age of 28, joins the Colts after six years with the New York Giants and a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings. Despite a challenging 2024 season, the Colts have placed their trust in Jones to lead the offense, aiming for consistent performance and reliable ball movement.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen highlighted the decision, stating that it was based on trust and the ability to "run the operation" consistently. Steichen favoured Jones' steadiness and decision-making over Richardson's more explosive talent.

Richardson, a younger and more dynamic player, was benched last season in favour of veteran Joe Flacco. He will need to wait for his opportunity, as he remains the backup behind Jones. The Colts will open their season against the Miami Dolphins on September 7, 2025, with Jones as the starter.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants will not have Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback in the 2025 NFL season. Jaxson Dart is expected to take over the role at some point.

It's important to note that neither Jones nor Richardson has managed to separate themselves in the quarterback battle for the Colts. The team still had a little under a month to decide their ultimate plan regarding the quarterback position.

The Colts took a significant chance on Richardson by selecting him fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. In his rookie season with the Colts, Richardson started four games, rushing for 136 yards and four touchdowns. In the 11 games he started last season, he threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

In the Colts' Week 1 game of the preseason, Richardson got the start before leaving early with an injury. He completed 59% of his passes for 577 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in his rookie season.

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, it seems Anthony Richardson could be on pace to start his first game in September since leaving the Giants last year. The Colts will be relying on Jones' experience and Richardson's potential to lead them to success on the field.
