Competitor Krause finishes seventh amidst the obstacle chaos; Weber secures a medal position
In the ongoing Athletics World Championships in Tokyo, German athletes have been making their mark, with several impressive performances and close calls.
Julian Weber, the world number one in the javelin, qualified for the final as the second-best with a throw of 87.21 meters. Weber, who is aiming to win a medal at the 2023 World Championships after narrowly missing out in the past, found some breathing room in the final thanks to Frank Busemann, the Atlanta silver medallist. However, Weber finished seventh as the best European in the javelin final, missing out on the top spot.
Elena Kelety ran a personal best of 54.61 seconds to finish 15th in the 400m hurdles. Despite her efforts, fellow German athlete Eileen Demes failed to qualify for the 400m hurdles, finishing 24th in 55.98 seconds.
Robert Farken from Leipzig finished sixth in the men's 1500m final in 3:35.15 minutes. Meanwhile, Isaac Nader from Portugal won the men's 1500m final in a time of 3:34.10 minutes.
The U23 European champion Owe Fischer-Breiholz had to withdraw from the 400m hurdles due to injury, but there was still hope for a German medal in the event. Emil Agyekum qualified for the 400m hurdles final as the fifth fastest, breaking the 48-second barrier for the first time since Harald Schmid.
In the women's 3000m steeplechase final, Peruth Chemutai (Uganda) fell, as did Doris Lemngole (Kenya) and Norah Jeruto (Kazakhstan) near the finish. Faith Cherotich (Kenya) took the win in a time of 8:51.59 minutes, while double European champion Gesa Krause finished seventh, setting a season best of 9:14.27 minutes.
The second half of the World Championships is expected to have more emotional moments, thrilling competitions, and potentially some surprises. As the event progresses, three German athletes – Johannes Vetter, Matthias de Zordo, and DDR athlete Detlef Michel – will be hoping to join Julian Weber in the record books as javelin world champions. Christina Obergföll, who has won medals at the World Championships in javelin throw, will also be looking to add to her collection of accolades.
Despite not being at 100% due to an infection, Weber feels ready for the javelin final and is determined to bring home a medal for Germany. The countdown to the final moments of the World Championships is on, and the anticipation is building as the world's best athletes continue to battle it out for glory.
